Big Brother 14: Ian Terry Houseguest Profile
July 10, 2012 |From the CBS Big Brother 14 cast photo & bio of houseguest Ian Terry, one might suspect he’s a bit of a nerd… okay a LOT of a nerd. Well, they would probably be right. Ian Terry, originally from Pittsburgh, is a student at Tulane University in New Orleans studying chemical engineering, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Ian Terry lists his hobbies as “sleeping, bicycling, and television” and served as a Resident Advisor at Sharp Hall dorm at Tulane. If you are unfamiliar with the job of an RA, it means you are the person everyone bitches to when the toilets overflow and you’re responsible for dragging the drunk people out of the hallway and into their rooms. Well, maybe that was just what the RAs at my college did…
In addition to his Resident Advisor gig and periodic work for the Science and Engineering Department at Tulane, Ian Terry has also worked as a “Special Agent” for kgb’s 542542 text answering service. The job consists of answering random questions texted to the kgb service. In a press release for kgb, Ian Terry is quoted as saying: “I like the flexibility of the hours, as well as the fact that I learn interesting trivia while on the job.”
Interestingly enough, however, Ian Terry may not be your stereotypical totally non-athletic geek type, despite his surface appearance. While we can’t be 100% certain it is him, there is a listing for an Ian Terry of the same age from Pittsburg, PA at Athlinks.com — a website for runners and other physical fitness types — although no races are shown for him. In his Google+ profile, Ian Terry also lists “fitness” and “max muscle” among his interests, and he says he likes a “grueling bike ride” in his CBS profile. Plus, if the photo on his Google+ profile really is him, then Ian Terry could be hiding a decent bod under those huge glasses and bad haircut. Although it doesn’t really look like it from his preseason videos…
I suspect, BTW, that the ‘terrified and uncomfortable’ portrayel Ian gives in the majority of his preseason interviews may be a bit more ‘acting’ than his actual personality. Despite being a brainy type, this guy does appear to have a thriving social life, be involved in a lot of social events, likes watching himself on camera, and seems to enjoy partying it up. Also, he’s a huge Big Brother superfan (as we’ll get to in a moment) so he may just be hamming up the ‘awkward nerd’ thing a bit just for the fun of it.
Despite the hints that Ian Terry might be more athletic and less bookish than he looks, it is obvious that he does fall in the ‘brainy’ category of Big Brother houseguests. On his Facebook page, Ian happily posts quotes from John Steinbeck, Oscar Wilde, E.E. Cummings, and Feodor Dotoevski. He also appears to be quite engaged in campus politics, according to the events he’s participated in on Facebook. Interestingly, we note that Ian includes his father and his brother as “family” on his Facebook page, but no mom. Sad story in there somewhere? Or is his mom just not a Facebook person?
Ian Terry may also be a medical marijuana fan. We can’t confirm it is definately him, but there is an Ian Terry listed as one of the student directors of the Tulane chapter of NORML, which is an organization dedicated to working to reform marijuana laws. I tried to confirm this by calling and sending an e-mail to the contact information provided, but received no response.
Perhaps he had been smoking when he made this video of himself reading erotic novels and kicking himself in the face? (His roommate at least certainly looked like he was on something…) Interestingly, it also proves that he can apparently either read without glasses, or he’s fine wearing contacts. Which begs the question, is he really milking the “nerd” persona with those horrible glasses in his CBS profile to appear less threatening to the other houseguests? Or is CBS pushing the “nerd” look on him?
Ian also apparently also enjoys prank calling C-Span. Now THAT is nerdy.
According to Ian, he is an expert on strategy from both Big Brother and Survivor, of which he is a huge fan. That makes me wonder if Ian might peg Willie Hantz as Russell Hantz‘s brother pretty quickly and try to use that knowledge to his advantage somehow. The truth is, he’s really quite the Big Brother and Survivor superfan and has allegedly spent a huge amount of time on Big Brother forums for both the US and UK shows doing live feed recaps, racking up posts on big fan sites like Digital Spy (this is suspected to be his user account there) and Suvivor Sucks. He even reportedly tried to see if there was some way he could get on Big Brother UK at one point, according to BigBrotherGossip.com. Ian says he doesn’t plan to lie about his age or occupation, but he doesn’t want the other houseguests to know how much he’s watched the show previously.
Ian, like Frank Eudy, is totally up for a showmance, but he insists he’s actually looking for a real hookup and ‘geniune’ romance, not just another way to gain allies in the house. He also wants to get in on a strong alliance right from the start, where he hopes to find a place in the middle as player who is considered not too strong and not too weak.
Our Prediction: Ian really does have the brains and that could work to his advantage. Unfortunately, however, the smartest people in the house rarely seem to get to the final three. Brains sometimes backfire when a houseguests overthinks his strategy or is unwilling to be flexible beyond the mapped out plans he has made going in. Ian could make it very far indeed if he does manage to get in that strong alliance he wants and he’ll probably be good at mental challenges. If the other players are wise, they will probably want him in their alliance as he could prove loyal and helpful, but likely isn’t winner material. However, if Ian can’t get that early, strong alliance in, and he isn’t athletic enough to hold out in the physical challenges, he could be an early out.
Ian Terry CBS Big Brother Profile
Name: Ian Terry
Age: 21
Hometown: Pittsburgh, Pa. (living in New Orleans, La.)
Occupation: Engineering Student at Tulane University
Three adjectives that describe you: Intelligent, eccentric and analytical.
Favorite Activities: I really enjoy biking whenever I get the chance. A grueling bike ride is excellent.
Most difficult part about living inside the Big Brother house: Being disconnected from sports, family, friends, internet and TV.
Strategy for winning “Big Brother:” I want to make an alliance with about six people and I’d like to be seen as maybe the fourth strongest in the group, that way it wouldn’t be me going up if the other side gained the power.
Which past Big Brother cast member did you like most or least: My all-time favorite has to be Dr. Will from BB2/BB7. He played the game with absolute finesse both times, and as a 10 year old watching BB2, I definitely would say I idolized him back then.
What are you afraid of: I’m definitely afraid of venomous snakes and any large, deadly animals, simply because they’re extremely dangerous. I also have a real fear of vomiting because it’s really painful and a fear of drowning since I feel like it’d be one of the worst ways to die.
What is the accomplishment you are most proud of: My proudest accomplishment so far in life is going to Tulane, far away from my family and old friends, studying the hardest major I could possibly take, and surviving it for three years.
Finish this sentence: My life’s motto is… I came here to kick butt and chew bubblegum, but I’m all out of bubblegum.
What would you take into the house and why:

It is completly clear that Ian Terry is on the Spectrum. He seems to have Aspergers a high functioning Autism! I can’t believe CBS isn’t making this public! If he didn’t come fourth with this information then someone needs to check it out. I mean he has to know. IF not it is CBS responsiblity to have him checked out. People are making fun of his behaviors and his behaviors are perfectly normal for that of a Adult with Autism! CBS look into this before you get plagued by the Autism world!! I am the parent of two autistic children.
Amen, Missy! I thought the same thing. I can’t stand that they are making a joke of something he has no control over!
I agree. If he is really on the spectrum this is abominable. If he were in a wheelchair, people would think twice.
All the comments are very interesting Wondering about myself now I stuttered terribly as a child also found great comfort in rocking. When I see Ian I can’t help but understand his actions Back in those days try had no names for it. But I did outgrow it stopped stuttering at age 16
My life has been nothing but normal as am 68 years old now

I think CBS may have a little clue by now. Noticed tonight episode they should him less. However the showed him kicking himself in the head? I know he was joking about it, but by the way he kept doing it over and over again confirms he is on the spectrum. I know a lot of jocks in H.S. who would do that same stupid trick but they knew when to stop. A person with Autism will keep going to get the attention. So sad again they were laughing and snickering at him. Boogie finds him a complete joke, which is sooo sad. I use to be a big boogie fan but I can’t stand him anymore. He is using poor Ian!!
Lol I went to high school with Ian. He does not have autism, he’s just awkward. I promise.
Is Ian gay? He is so cute!
Whether or not you went to high school with Ian does not necessarily mean that you would know if he is autistic. I would suggest that his actions lead me to believe he has Aspergers Syndrome. People afflicted with this ailment are high functioning, somewhat socially inept, clumsy, etc. Also, the repetiveness of actions is a give away and the rocking. Watch him on the swing or at the table and he is in constant motion. Every once in awhile he says something and reminds me of Dustin Hoffman in Rainman.
The symptom that made me think he is on the spectrum is the rocking. He is constantly rocking (stemming). On the hammock and just when hes sitting and talking. The other stuff is just extra. Remember Mark Zuckerberg (facebook founder) is on the spectrum. Autism can range from awkward billionaire to being institutionalized and needing 24 hour a day care needs. Depends on the level of wiring issues in the brain.
using examples from movies? weak. find something substantial.
Wow Shaler, just awkard? No, his behavior is quite typical of aspergers, which by the way is fabulous! Highly intelligent and socially awkward is what aspergers is! Yes, that is simplifying it a bit, but I don’t understand why there is a huge misconception still that people with these “disorders” stick out like a sore thumb. It is a spectrum disorder, and people with aspergers are usually highly intelligent and are different socially. The world is made up of people with different strengths and weaknesses. Thank God for people with Aspergers! I love it. He rocks!!!!!
Really, all you people who insist that he has Aspergers need to get to steppin’ and campaign to get him America’s Choice if you really want to support him.
Some of you claim a medical background in Autism/Asperger. you should be using your resources in that community to vote in support of him.
you can be sure Dan/Frank/Boogie have plans for such.
Don’t be so sure. I have Asperger’s Syndrome. I also have a 163 IQ, which is not uncommon with Aspergers — you have many spectrum traits, communication disorders, sensory disorders, socialization difficulties, other conditions also can be present. There is NOT A SINGLE CONCLUSIVE LIST of symptoms…that’s why it’s a spectrum disorder.
I speculated that he does as well. Maybe it’s a buried secret, as some employers look at it negatively. Maybe he’s undiagnosed. Maybe it’s just ADHD after all – but I’ve been good at pegging fellow Aspies. It’s his choice to acknowledge it or not…I can respect that.
I keep MINE secret as well. Except on anonymous blogs..like this one!
Ian is a goofball. A classic lunatic. There is no such thing as autism.
Of course there is such a thing as autism. Ian does not have it, however.
Frankly, I’ve been sickened at the sight of people all over the web diagnosing Ian with this or that, when they are not qualified to do so. Now that he’s out and has seen some of it, he’s said publicly that he has found it hurtful. As someone who is exactly like Ian, I have been disgusted by it.
Nobody likes being pigeon-holed by the ill-informed on the basis of how they appear.
Gosh! What happened to people just being different?? Drop the label, he’s obviously functioning just fine
I know right..? People don’t know what they’re talking about these days. People on facebook post shit on facebook that’s not akward, and call it akward, now being akward means you have autism..? Wtf is wrong with people.
I noticed ian’s tip toe walking on the first night. then just his over all awkwardness and odd social behaviour made me think he might be on the spectrum. i was surprised today that when i searched his name, autistic came up beside it.
From Julie Chen comments concerning Ian, if he is autistic, they probably know it. (http://www.nola.com/tv/index.ssf/2012/08/julie_chen_examines_ian_terrys.html)
And while HIPAA only examines complaints of privacy violations against medical entities, it would be bad for Big Brother to acknowledge his condition without his permission.
Keeping silent might be his best move since people fear most what they don’t understand. Telling people might make him a target.
I suspect that one or more players may have similar thoughts concerning Ian’s possible condition and may respect that he does not use it to get sympathy.
While I don’t see all the feeds, Dan appears to have a fascination in Ian.
Ian is a chump, he sold Frank and Boogie out…not for the game, but because he likes Ashley and he knows Ashley likes Frank. Keep ya mind on the money and not on the honey.
Boogie’s the sell out. He didn’t even try for HOH. He’s a money hungry floater.
Boogie went for the money becuz it was suppose to be a showing to Shane and Britney that he wasn’t coming after them… doesn’t make the guy a floater..
You don’t show trust by inaction. You show it by winning and staying true to your word. Frank’s expression tells it all, he did not look happy about Boogies choice.
Any possibility that Ian has a secret alliance with Frank and Shane. While it looks like they have been against each other, they have dominated HOH and POV. In POV Ian looks to be throwing them when Frank or Shane looks safe.
Just think that as a “superfan” I don’t think he would play the game without making BIG moves.
Who is Ian. tonight he said that he learned from the best, like father like son. Is He a former houseguest’s son, brother?????
I was wondering the same thing Cindy! I cant think of who though…
Neither, He talked about this DR in the live feeds… he said that he referred to Boogie as his Big Brother father figure (Show must have edited that part out). So the “like father” is Boogie.
Ian said he has watched the show since he was 10 so he knows the game pretty well. What he meant is he took Boogies skills and used against Boogie, learning from the best. Even though a lot of people don’t see that it would come from him
Definitely Aspergers…Definitely Aspergers
Watching Ian, I have thought the same thing, Aspergers. His social anxiety and awkwardness as well as the constant motion, rocking etc. If this is the case with Ian, kudos to him for having the courage to do something like Big Brother!!! I wouldn’t be shocked if he wins it all, I think he has a very good shot at it! Good luck Ian!!
Ian does not have to have Asperger’s Syndrome at all; my grandson has ADHD with Tourette’s Syndrome and he is very similar to Ian. There are too many people that automatically think someone is on the spectrum.
I agree. My wife and I are in the medical field and our first thoughts upon seeing Ians movement were that they are tics related to a mild/manageable form or Tourette’s. With Asperger’s Syndrome, an individual’s primary difficulty is coping in a social environment. Ian clearly has no difficulty with functioning socially.
Thank you. I am exactly like Ian in my behaviors and mannerisms but I’m middle-aged and female. I do not have an ASD; I have ADHD.
Aaron, I am in the medical field as well, and have a child with Aspergers. Tics are uncontrollable, whereas Ian’s movements are completely intentional on his part, as they provide a sense of calmness for him. How do you not know the difference? Tics serve no purpose; whereas repetitive movements, such as rocking are soothing. Ian is in college, he is smart. He has learned to function socially in society. I am sick of people thinking that individuals with Aspergers have no chance of behaving appropriately in a social setting. They learn just like the rest of us. Quit selling these individuals short on their future. They can absolutely learn how to read social cues and “function socially”!!!!!
With all this talk about aspergers, I think he deserves more than just “Good luck”
If you feel this strongly, start a campaign to get him “America’s Choice”
Shane and Danielle are planning to get him out so good luck just don’t cut it.
I taught children with Autism and I strongly suspect Ian has Aspergers. Without testing I can’t b certain but IMO that’s why the stemming etc
Tippy toes, awkwardness, stimming. I say aspergers. Its not a horrible thing to say by the way. Just another type of person. My son is aspergers and I see lots of the same traits. Its not putting how down by saying that. I think its wonderful that he is there and I’m rooting for him!
Thank you Stacey for speaking the truth. Saying someone has Aspergers is not a bad thing. Heck, it’s probably a compliment! I’m tired of people misconstruing it. I too have a son with Aspergers and he is fabulous! Yes, they are socially awkward, but they can absolutely live a fabulous, rewarding, fullfilling life and even have strong bonds with people. There is such a misconception out there, and I’m tired of it. Societies ignorances are sure coming to light in these post. I wish you and your son the best!
I have worked 22 years in Special Education at a school board and that is why I say, “If it looks like a duck, sometimes acts like a duck, doesn’t mean it is a duck” (quote passed on to me from another person who also is in Special Education) I can tell there are so many caring people on this board. I admire the strength you and your child and families have. Please let’s stop trying to diagnose Ian. Ian is a different person than any of our children or grandchildren. Whatever label people want to give him may only cause him and his family grief, if they ever read this board. Let’s just cheer him on and wish him good luck in the BB game!
I agree that there is to much talk about this topic. However, the “BB after dark” program is likely fueling most of this. Boogie made a comment that he must have a medical condition during the sushi party. this part was not aired during regular show.
It’s a shame that the producers like the gossip on the show so much that they did not cut the feed until after the comment. Probably only cut the feed to cover themselves. My guess is they were told to change the topic and shortly went back into the house.
The producers work hard to cover their manipulation of the game. Hide the fact that Frank cheated before the one that was show recently when he tried to get Brit an answer in the veto comp. Tried to get Shane not to nominate Frank and Boogie. Tried get Ian to use the gold ball of veto. My guest is that the producers engineered Dan’s resurrection.

don’t know how long it will be up but if you want it out of Ian mouth search this on youtube.
Dan Gheesling and Ian Terry discuss Ian’s disability – Part
feed switches to the fish tank just after Dan asks if “they” knew and then just after they mention one character on bb theory.
in case it goes down Ian says “ADHD”
YouTube sure did take down the video entitled “Dan Gheesling and Ian Terry discuss Ian’s disability Part 1″ and also “Part 2″. It’s about a 15 minute conversation in 2 parts where Dan mercilessly asks ? after ? to Ian about his uncanny intelligence, his need to “move” all the time, how he handles it, when he noticed he was “different” and what his parents say about it. Ian admits that he has to “move” all the time and Dan asked him if there is a name for that and Ian answers, “Stimmin’…. like… stimulation”. Dan asked how Ian deals with it and Ian says that if he sits in certain couches or chairs he will rock and that he does try to or likes to sit in rocking chairs or the hammock in the BB house.
In his answer to what his parents have to say about it, Ian said that like if his brother has friends over, he has to try to stop rocking on the couch because his Dad will say, “Knock that shit off!! It’s embarrassing!” Which leads me to believe that his condition was ignored and overlooked by his parents, which I suppose gives Ian mixed feelings about knowing that he definitely has a condition.
It is also significant to notate that in the video posted above where Ian is reading a book while his friend listens and rocks in his chair the entire time, his friend says, “No wonder why you don’t go to the gym, this is tiring!” He says that because he is trying out what it feels like to have to rock all the time while Ian reads. You’ll also notice that while his friend is rocking, at one point he also quickly bounces up and down in the middle of it and starts laughing. What’s notable about that, is that in this particular video that I will share the link to, Ian also bounces in the same fashion and clearly that is what his friend is imitating in the video on Ian’s FB. In the youtube video that I am posting a link to, Ian is sitting calmly, then suddenly sits up, bounces, moves around and you can see his face contort along with these movements, and at the end of it he puts his hand on his face which shows embarrassment and hiding. At which point Brittany says, “What was THAT!? Did you just have a small seizure??” Ian says “No, I just needed to move around bc I’ve been in one spot too long.” or something like that and Brittany continues her line of questioning saying, “So much so you had to bounce 4 times!??” At that point Ian begins to stutter and says”Yes, I was stimmin’ out”, and then the conversation is headed in another direction. Another youtube video entitled “Frank Eudy tickles Ian”, you can see that after Frank is done tickling him, Ian goes back to sitting on the ground and is clearly rocking.
In addition to whatever he wins, I think they should award him the hammock!
Although considerably after the fact (5 monts late, to be exact), I have found reading these posts and other material very interesting and have a lot to think about how I feel about all of it. Some very interesting and thought-provoking conversation, thats’ for sure. I admit to not being sure what I personally think of it all…I still have quite a bit of processing to do, but I feel the time I have spent reading here has been time very well spent. In conclusion, let me simply say that I have never felt a reality show contestant more deserving of his victory (be it on Big Brother or any other show for that matter) or the win more rightfully earned than Ian winning Big Brother. I found it simply inspiring how he seemed to blossom and come into his own as the season unfolded, cuminating in his awesome and very deserved victory on Finale Night…CONGRATS, IAN! A more deserving winner simply odes not exist…WAY TO GO!!!
