Last Wednesday, Big Brother 23 premiere night kicked off with a bang. There were new and exciting elements that were added to the game, such as the Big Brother 23 teams. Big Brother introduced the houseguests to the new team twist by having them play three introductory games to determine the teams. Host Julie Chen had all the houseguests head to the backyard to compete for a chance to become a team Captain.
After the houseguests competed to become Big Brother 2021 team captains, they took turns selecting which Big Brother 23 houseguests would join them on their team of four. The new team’s set-up can be a little confusing, but we are here to explain it all so you are all caught up and ready for tonight’s second episode of Big Brother 2021 and ready for the new Wildcard competition.
After the Big Brother 2021 houseguests entered the house in groups of four, they competed in their group to become one of the four team captains. The houseguests had to complete a poster puzzle in the kick-off competition, and the fastest to do, won the honor of team captain. It is important to note that the new teams will only be in place during the first four weeks of the season.
The winning Big Brother 23 team captains were Brandon “Frenchie” French, Whitney Williams, Christain Birkenberger, and Claire Rehfuss.
Once the Big Brother 23 team captains were established, they took turns, similar to a schoolyard pick, selecting one houseguest at a time from a selection of 2 houseguests. The houseguest not chosen each round went back into the pool to be selected again. The final four Big Brother 23 teams are as follows:
The Jokers: Frenchie (captain), Azah Awasum, Britini D’Angelo, Derek Frazier.
The Aces: Whitney (captain), Brent Champagne, Derek Xiao, and Hannah Chaddha.
The Kings: Christian (captain), Alyssa Lopez, Xavier Prather, and Sarah Beth Steagall.
The Queens: Claire (captain), Kyland Young, Tiffany Mitchell, and Travis Long.
Once the four teams were selected and finalized, the four-team captains competed against one another for the first Head of Household of Big Brother 23. Their teammates did play a small role in the competition by holding the platform for their captain while he/she/they balanced a card puzzle on top. Frenchie was the winner of that competition and therefore the first HOH.
Not only did Frenchie win safety with his HOH win, but his entire team won safety for the week in the Big Brother 23 house. In addition, he was offered a double or nothing deal from host Julie Chen Moonves. If accepted, Frenchie had the opportunity to win safety for his team for an additional week. If he lost, he and his entire team lost safety and his HOH status. Frenchie declined the offer from Julie. For the next three weeks, every time a player wins HOH, their entire team will be safe as well.
Tonight, a brand new competition will be introduced. According to executive producer Allison Grodner, the three nonimmune teams will be competing in the Big Brother 23 Wildcard competition where one houseguest from each team will be selected to represent their team. Those three houseguests will battle it out, and only one winner will prevail. That winner will be immune for the week, but their team will not.
Also this season, big rewards come with big risks. The winning houseguest will be safe, but there will be a price to pay. The winner will also agree to a penalty or reward that could affect that houseguest, his or her team, or the entire Big Brother 23 house! Taking the safety route may put blood on the houseguest’s hands and change the course of the game.
